Communication Skills for Joint Degree Students: Week 2 January 19 - 23

2015-01-19- Monday

This day i meet again Mrs Dina Mustafa in second week. She coming in first because Mrs Paulina Panen, can't teaching us now. Before class start she give motivation to all students. She want we seriously  when learn something, because if not you can't get your dream, said Mrs Dina. 

She starting with giving some reading material and we devide in the group. In my group consist of four people, that is Vandha Pradwiyasma Widartha, Kiki Supendi, Heri Arum Nugroho and the beautiful one is Kadek Restu Yani. This day we learn about tables and figures, especially is why we using that. We explain to all people using presentation after that.

My result from this learning is important to using tables and figures when we want to write scientific paper, so we must know this basic idea. 
• Don't using to many text (crowded) with details, is better using table,
• If you have similar information in many area its easily if creating into one table,
• If a table just have few rows & columns is better in to using text,
• If you have difficult explanation with text or table is better to using a figure.

For home task she also giving to comparing tables and figures in reading paper with last paper with title: Research in computer science an empirical study

2015-01-20 - Tuesday

In this day me and all students also learn about tables and figures, now class is teaching by Mrs. Paulina Panen. She explain how to writing and discussing the research results. This is sample of structure how to being good research.

A. Introduction  -> background, problem statement.
B. Literature Review:
   1. Purpose of research
   2. Theory, previous research (using methods, variables, and result)
   3. Research framework ( using hypothesis, model, and operational definitions)
C. Methods Design:
  1. Design model with research
 2. Instrument (operational definition, sub variables, instrument) with data collecting strategy, respondents when and where.
D. Discussion -> using tables and figures.
E. Conclusion 

On 14 pm, we start again this course with Mrs. Rahayu Dwi Riyanti. She starting  this course with conversation how to formulate the question  during a class. More about that is how to delivering our idea/mind into another person with writing. Is better if you writing your question first before you asking, said Mrs.Yanti. After that we watching movie together and also asking question about that movies.

First movies talking about   how to creating a small mine craft house with cubes. Second movies we listening about algorithm topic with title: Balanced Search Trees. Until two movies me can hear clearly but we also see next movies which more difficult than before. I don't many understand about the last movie, it is because the music something bigger that conversation. 

2015-01-21 - Wednesday

We meet again Mrs. Rahayu at 9 AM. She tells us about how to making good claim and recounter claim to support our argument. We also must giving good evidence with tables and figures to completing good argument. Basicly this is sample of claim and recounter claim.

After that she giving us reading material about ICT in education and goverment. All of us making summary after that. This is my summary about ICT goverment in Japan from 1996 - 2000.

Every aspect when using ICT in Japan Central Goverment is decreasing from 1996 until 2000. Central Goverment is consist of: Local branch office, ministries and agencies, total central goverment, and facilities and instituties. There are also considering variation data beside that. For local branch office gets less from 3.5 in 1996 and gets 1.5 in 2000.  Ministries and agencies gets 1.5 in 1996 and in 2000 gets less than 1. Total central goverment get 1.5 in 1996 and gets less than 1 in 2000. Then facilitates and institutes less than in 1996 and get 0.5 in 2000. So that is all decreasing in japan central goverment in 1996 - 2000.


2015-01-22 - Thursday

There is not class in this day, Mrs Aline Almandha sick today. She gives task to me and my friends. Suddenly Mr Edo give task me to teaching in labolatorium room because students from SMKN 57 Jakarta was waiting for learn. He says to me, you can give them Hangout with Google+ and web conference using Webex by Cisco. Then i going to lab.

I am preparing projector in the lab before starting class. In this class consist of one teacher, one acamedician, and nine students. I starting teach after that. For the first,, student must creating email using gmail.com. After that i explain Google+, they also creating google plus profile for first time and i invite them to starting conference using Google+ Hangout. They all accept and we learn together now. Finaly i give task for students to exploring all fitures.

Web conference in webex is doesn't i give to them because they can not edited, they also can to patricipant. For replace them i using Skype in the next session. We trying together until lunch at 12.00 PM.

Today i have no english class. Because both of teacher can not attend the class. But ms aline leave a task to do for us. My friend send the task to me by email. The task is still about table, image and figure reading.
Because there is no class today, so i just stay at home. In case of the weather is so support to just lay in home. It’s a heavy rain today. I decide to spend my day by finish the task that ms aline gave and watching korean movie. This was my thursday going, a little bit bored since i just stay home all day long but i got so much rest too. :D

On Jan, 21-22 I dont come to Seamolec, because I have to go to Vacation Day with my team in my office.
Today (Jan 21, 2015), it will be my first experience to do offroad. Start from Lembang, and finish at Jayagiri. Actually, thats just short track, but condition of the road is difficult and make that feel so long. Driver must be carefull to driving. And passenger must hold on.

Sevli's fifth log - Mrs. Dina Second Class

The best way to illustrate the information that complicated within less space are using tables and figures. That’s way when it comes to writes something, many students and researcher use tables and figures. Theoretically, tables and figures used to present the data, so the writer can get more space, but many writers still repeats what the table illustrate into sentences and explain it again. That is ones of the awkwardness writer’s behavior. Despite of what should do and shouldn’t in the paper titled “effective use of tables and figures in abstracts, presentations, and papers”, there’s agreement from some institution like universities or research institutions about how to use tables and figures in abstracts, presentations, and especially papers. The institutions use this agreement so the readers able to identify the information it contain easily. Another purposes for this agreement are to avoid the boredom effect and improve enjoyment to read this kind writing. Because the papers can contain too many pages. For example when the students want to write the final assignment, they must use lines to divide rows and rows or columns and columns. To improve readable of the writing is the main idea from the agreement to use lines that way. Another agreement tell what type face should use by the writers, like the font, the space between paragraphs, where the title should place, and others agreement. Overall this agreements have the same idea, to improve readable of the writing.

Sevli's seventh log - Miss a Class

My laptop battery become worst lately, I can works without charger plug in power outlet. So, today I don’t come to the class, I choose to find replacement for laptop’s battery. I depart at eight and back home six at noon. I lost in Jakarta with busway, its contrary with my thesis. Suggestion best route for people when travelling in Indonesia’s big cities.
Back talking the class, I ask about today topic to friends that comes to the class today. They tell me, Mrs. Yanti came switch schedule with Mrs. Aline. She ask the participant to make argument and analysis about a paper about tobacco and smoke. It’s two different article in one pages separate with two columns. Then they tell me Mrs. Yanti give another paper contain article with topic “ICT in education” and “ICT in government”. She ask us to make a paragraph of resume from that article.

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015. This morning we learn about "How to Make an Arguments in academic writing". Mrs. Yanti explain to us about how to make an argument and how support that argument in our academic writings especially thesis. Interprete and describe the data and also make a conclusion from there as evidence, and then we can process our data as an evidence to our argument, data can strengthen our argument. She explain to us the purpose of argumentative essay is to persuade the reader to accept and seriously consider your opinion on controversial issues. When you make an argument in your essay, you must consider your audience, like: whom are you trying reach, what do they already know about your topic, what is your relationship with your audience and how does it impact your word choice and tone. Then you must make a claim like: your opinion or position on an issue, must be supported with reasons and evidence, evidence can include quotes, facts, and data, also evidence must be explain. Then you make a reason for your claim because reason support the thesis and form argument with your evidence and then you must have a counter claim to your argument like: consider the opposite side, argues againt your claim, turn againt your argument to challenge it, and then turn back to reaffirm that argument.

After she explain to us, she give us article with data statistic and description about “ICT in Education and Government” and from that article she ask us to make a questions and summary from the information and data we get. Then she give us an article again that shows us the statistic graphs about “Tobacco use is a risk factor for six of the eight leading causes of death in the world” and “Nearly two thirds of the world’s smokers live in 10 countries” and ask us to make argument paper about from that data given on the article.

Today i have a class with mrs yanti. She also teach about how to explain a diagram. She said that i can not just explain what i see. I need to analyze deeper than what i see in the diagram and try to argue about what i see. Because if i can argue about that, i will get the best explanation of a diagram or table. I have 3 task today, first is to summarize paper in one paragraph, second is to make sumarize depend on the diagram, and the last one is explain a diagram with my own opinion. I choose a diagram about 10 country with highest smoker in the world. Well, it is a liitle bit sad when i see my country in a third rank. I try to give my opinion about why my country become the third rank. By the way, study with mrs yanti was so fun. I was surpised when she told that she is fans of korean boyband big bang. And she came to k pop concert too. Even i am younger than her and love to watch korean drama or reality show, i never think to attend their concert. Hahaha.. The class is over about 11.00 am, but my friend and i still stay in the class till 01.00 pm to finish our task. After that we had our lunch together in kfc near seamolec. 

[Day 8] Class with Mrs.Yanti

Today Mrs. Yanti attend to change Mrs. Aline's class. Unfortunately I can't came.  I feel my stomach really sick this morning.  Actually it is always happen every month, yup, women period. Hehe.. :D

I ask my roommate about today topic and task. She said we have 3 task from Mrs. Yanti. The first task is make argument and analysis about Tobacco in one page. Mrs. Yanti gave us one page contain two diagrams, one diagram is about "Tobacco use is a risk factor for six of the eight leading causes of death in the world" and another diagram is "Nearly two thirds of the world's smokers live in 10 country". I can imagine what I want to analyze from the page. 

The second task is in second paper. The paper have two topics: " ICT in Education" and "ICT in Government". The paper talk about how effect of the ICT in education and government. From that topics, first we should choose one topic to be resumed. Resume write in one page only, one paragraph. Then make question as much as we can. I think I will choose the first topic, about education. Hope I can finish this task well. 

As my dictionary, I found one word in the paper: "prevalent". In Indonesia its mean "lazim/umum". The synonym of that word is dominant, predominant, prevailing and rife. Okay, hope it will be useful for me and all readers :). 

Kadek - Jan 21 2015 #8th Log

As usually, I attend English class on 9 am in the morning and now class is lecture by Mrs. Yanti. She present about how we create argument on thesis and how we support our argument with our evidence and make sure that the audience can deliver and understand what we do. Within twenty minutes she presents about that. We discuss about that she already present on front of class and find an argument about her topic. After finish, she gives us an article talk about ICT in education and government. On this article is talking about how effect of the ICT in education and government. The article also shows some data graphic of some countries whose use computer, how they use computer and reason about using computer for education. Another way, government use ICT for public services, manage data with email and web page for share information. The article show us about how big effect of using ICT in the world. Everything changes people to be digital native and digital immigrant with the technology. From the article we have to do some tasks and collect this day. First, we write some question about everything that we want to know but haven't put yet on article. The second is writing the summary about the article within one paragraph. And the last is writing an argument from another article that already she gives to us. The new articles is talking about tobacco use is risk factor for six of the eight leading causes of death in the world. We finish class on 11.30 am o'clock.

On Monday morning, i went to my campus in ITB. I went to my laboratory because I still have responsibility there. I met my friends, and taking my stuff in my table (because i will no longer be in a laboratory). Then I go back to my dorm and taking all of my stuff. So sad to know that i have to leave my room, but I have to. After tat I directly go back to Jakarta with my friend wibby. The traffic was so crowded, we almost 3,5 hours in the toll road. When we arrived in Jakarta, ww went to Tebet and having lunch there. And wibby still have to connecting her trip to her home by a train, so we separated in Stasiun Tebet. When I arrived at home, I directly unpacked everything, because I live in a small house that will my stuff look so much if I don't arranged it well. That was how my Monday going.

On Sunday morning, i went jogging in Saraga Bandung, after a long time not having any kind of sport. I need to keep my healthiness, not only body but also my mind. Afer that, i had brakfast in Dipati Ukur. In the afternoon, i went to BEC to checking the newest price of laptop. I need a new laptop because my laptop is going slower, the hardisk is full, and the processot can't work if I'm using it to programmed or code something. After that, I go back to my dorm and clean up my room before I leaving. I rearranged my stuff to make it fit in my car when i bring that all to Jakarta. And so that how my last Sunday going, jogging, packing, cleaning. So far I always enjoy what I did.

On Saturday, I went to some Factory Outlet in Bandung, I'm looking for a coat, but I did't found it yet, even there is so many type and colour. And I just realized that one piece of coat is really expensive. Maybe I should save more money to buy only one piece of coat. After that, i went Pasar Baru to repair my watch. I change the battery because it seems not really good and make the machine of my watch a bit slower. It cost only 30.000 rupiah, quite cheap than a price in a mall i think. After that, i went to my friend's dorm, i bring my tv and fan there, because i don't know where i should bring it, i have no place to put that things, fortunately my friend so happy and willing me to take that stuff. After that, i went to Cihampelas to buy ice cream in Mangkok Manis Cafe. So far, my Saturday night was quite busy but still fun. I finishing everything i should finish there. So i can go back to Jakarta in the next day without any awkward feeling.

On Friday, i went back to Bandung so i can not came into english class on that day. I went to Bandung alone, and when arrived there I packed up my stuff in my dorm, so I can bring out all to Jakarta in the next day. But before I go back to Jakarta, there so many things I should do and I should finish. First, I went to campus to meet my friend and discuss about my thesis project. After that, I also do farewell meeting with my other friends because they knowing that I will go to Korea and will not meet me in about one year. We go to some places, we had so much fun, and after that I just realized that I'm gonna miss my friends so much. I hope when i go to Korea, i meet new friends that can be my best friend too, like my friends here. That will make me more comfort, because friends is everything when we lived far from family, far from parents.

Today i have a class with mrs pauline as a instructor. We learn about table and figure. mrs pauline teach us about the important to explain the table and figure. first, when we explain a table or figure it need a significant explanation. Second, we need to use a variative sentence, it means don't be repetitive. Because the repetitive sentence will make a professor who review our paper get bored. And use the thesaurus to write the sentences. After teach us, mrs pauline ask us to make a task in group about explain a table. We still have a mistake about explain the table and figure. But that is a learning progress to explain better and better. And mrs. pauline always teach and correct our wrong patiently. thank you mrs. pauline for today's class. I learn so much from you.. :)

Vandha PW #log 7 [20 Januari 2015] at 14.00 p.m

On Tuesday, January 20th 2015. We have second class on 02.00 p.m. these class as changed from mrs. Yanti schedule on Friday, January 16th 2015. We learned about how to ask question to the lecturer. First material, we were given video that inform about how to design home with computer software, from the video we have to given question about the video. We have to brave, we have to know about what we shall to ask to the lecture. When we already try to ask something, Mrs. Yanti given suggestion and advice how to ask something bravely, she said that “first, you must know with what you want to know or ask, second, you must write your question in paper so that when we are get nervous, we don’t get lost our question”. Second material, we were still given video that show about lecture explain material slowly and clearly. On second material, we were also ordered to give question, whatever question that relate with video. Third material, we were given last video about universe. I thought this video is quiet difficult to understand because i really don’t know about material. The material talked about how the universed was formed i think. The video show about the space, scientist opinion, galaxy, planets and other that relate with universe. Form those video, we were ordered to make summary of video. Video was turned on for 15 minutes. After that, we did summary that it can be writed on paper or computer. Thanks god, we didn’t have to write one page, we only wrote what we have get information about the video. If we wrote everything, we could not imagine what we have to write. For this material, i have something new about how to ask something bravely, listening skill and catched something message or information from audio or vide. Mrs Yanti given some tips to us. First, if we don’t understand about material, we have to ask because nothing stupid question if we want to ask. Second, if we listening something new, we have to focus with one thing that we already know. Last one, we have to try understand abut topic, because its impossible to us to remember everything from video or audio. Thank you very much.
